Tomorrow! You know the date and you know what to do! Come celebrate everyone’s favorite “South of the Border” holiday with us at the Santiago Pub Crawl! All the usual suspects will be in attendance: tequila, cerveza, margaritas, and nachos! Sombreros are optional, but encouraged.

We will meet at Lyrics Bar (257 Ernesto Pinto Lagarrigue) at 10 PM. Be sure to arrive on time to maximize your hour of free drinking! There will be drink specials all night, games, and a night to tell your little nietos about. All of this for only $10.000 CLP.

If you would like, come to Eclipse Bar (111 Loreto) at 7:30 for Language Roulette! If you are travelling around Chile or South America for a while and want to sharpen your Spanish, this is the perfect opportunity for you! You will be partnered with a native speaker of the other language (Spanish-English) and have 10 minutes to speak to them before rotating. By the way, there’s a free drink at registration to get yourself prepared for Cinco de Mayo. The cost is $4.000 CLP. Also, if you attend, you’ll receive a 20% discount for Pub Crawl right afterward.

Finally, your history lesson:

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not primarily celebrated in Mexico. It is mostly celebrated in the US. In a town called Pueblo, Mexico it is known as El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla, commemorating a battle won by the Mexican forces over the French army in 1862. Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated in September. In the US, it is a celebration of Mexican pride and heritage. But, maybe not in Arizona…

And now, this:

Chinchilla day

Craving some authentic Chilean gastronomy? Look no further than Galindo, located on Constitución and Dardignac in Bellavista (Dardignac 098). Just one street east of Pio Nono, you can find what might be Santiago’s best pastel de choclo, a sort of corn casserole or pie filled with chicken, beef, olives, hard boiled eggs and raisins. It is a staple for Chile’s winters and can easily be split between two people. Equally as filling is the porotos longaniza, a dish of white beans and a large sausage.

For lighter fare, try the fish reineta, or pomfret, which is served with an agregado. Or, maybe try the cazuela, a soup with a broth base including a chunk of beef, a portion of corn on the cob, squash, and vegetables. You can always go with empanadas, of which there are several varieties, including shrimp and cheese.

The restaurant is frequently crowded with travelers and Chilenos alike and the diners often spill onto the street where there are additional tables. It’s the perfect restaurant to try great Chilean food without having to pay through the teeth. The price of a dish can range from roughly $2.000 – 8.000, averaging around $4.000.

For more information and a menu in English, check out www.galindo.cl

This Friday (10 Febuary), The Santiago Pub Crawl presents it’s annual Cupid Is Stupid party. In celebration of Singles Awareness Day, this year we will celebrate our freedom of choice at the club Chocolate located at Ernesto Pinto Lagarrigue 192. The cost is a mere $4000 for a night full of Valentine’s Day bashing, debauchery and mayhem. There will be plenty of games, plenty of drinks, and plenty of opportunities to follow the third rule of Pub Crawl. The best part is, if you RSVP before 11:30 PM on Thursday, you will get in for free before 12:30 AM on Friday. Send an e-mail with your party’s names to: info@santiagopubcrawl.com. Last year we had around 500 guests. Let’s double it and show Cupid who’s boss! Nobody likes flying mutant babies anyway.

To RSVP for the event on Facebook and to see more event information, go here.

We will see you there!

Do you like wine? You probably know that Chile is one of the top wine-producing countries in the world. In 2009 it was the 9th highest producer of wine. Italy and France claimed number 1 and 2. You may also know that good wine gets better as it ages. How do you like your wine? Bubbly? Red? White? Rosé? With a good meal? How about when you add a 4.5 billion year old rock to the bottle?

Huffington Post reports that a Chilean vineyard in Cachapoal Valley has created a wine infused with a meteorite found in the Atacama desert. It made its crash landing there almost 6,000 years ago and is now being blended with red wine to create Meteorito. For now it’s only available at the winemaker/astronomer Ian Hutcheon’s observatory. However, there are plans to export this one-of-a-kind wine. That being said, don’t expect to see this at the Santiago Pub Crawl any time soon.
